How to Keep a Mattress Pad from Sliding

Mattress pads help in achieving firmness or softness instead of buying a new mattress. But preventing them from slipping, tends to be a challenge. No need to worry anymore as there are great ways that can help overcome the sliding. Some methods require less effort and no investment at all while others need a bit of your time and attention too.

The following are the methods that can help to eliminate the slipping of the bed topper:

Use non-skid mats

These mats help create friction between the mattress and the pad. It would help if you place them between the bed and the pillow. The mats are more helpful while on a latex or memory foam type of mattress.

Sheet suspenders/straps

The straps help to keep the mattress, pads, and sheets in place.  They eliminate slipping if fastened enough. No matter the movements you make in the bed, they will remain intact if well fixed.

Duct tape

You use it to tie the four corners of the pad and the mattress, together with a well-fitted sheet. The tape keeps the two held in position until the tape loses its adhesiveness. If the duct tape is unavailable, use a spray adhesive though it leaves marks on the mattress.

Use cotton or cotton/poly blend pad

The use of this pad creates more friction between the topper and the mattress. The slickness of the bed reduces while on the cotton pad and also using a fitted sheet.

Use safety pins

It’s the cheapest method to apply and requires less effort.  It would help if you did it right not to cause any injury or damage to your mattress topper or bed. Fix pins at edges of the pad and mattress on both sides of the bed. The needles should face downwards to prevent any chances of injury.

Adhesive Velcro strips/ tapes

It provides a solution to sliding if you are ready for the challenge since its more time-consuming. You should use the instructions as follows:

  • Attach Velcro hooks at the bottom of your mattress pad, and for better results, place straps near the edge of the pillow.
  • Attach the loop side to your mattress and line it up perfectly with the hook on the pad.
  • Repeat the procedure on the other edges of the mattress topper for more tightness.
  • Place the topper on the bed and stick the Velcro straps together.

Installing a footboard or headboard

Footboard and headboard can help the topper from skidding. Therefore, the pad should be touching both the footboard and headboard, and the footboard should be long enough.

Carpet tape

The tape should fix in the same way as the adhesive tape.  It would be best if you set the tape at the edges of both the mattress and the topper to hold them together.

Why does a mattress topper slide?

Slipping of the mattress pad can occur due to the following reasons:

  • Mismatch of the bed and the mattress topper size – the pad tends to be smaller and less fitting making it to slide.
  • Uneven mattress – as the bed ages, it becomes unbalanced, which causes the pad’s slipping.
  • Use of smooth mattress cover which reduces friction with the pad.
  • Lack of footboard/ headboard that acts as stoppers for the pad.
  • An unstable gliding base that’s creates a slippery platform for the topper.

Conclusion

A sliding mattress topper can cause discomfort and irritation at the same time. Adjusting it over and over can be exhausting too. The tips explained, like the use of velcro strips and others, will help you keep the bed structure in place.
